The Flickering Myth writing team share their thoughts on the first trailer for Marvel’s Black Panther…
On Friday evening, Marvel Studios gave us our first look at 2018’s Black Panther movie with the release of the official teaser trailer for the film, which sees Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) directing and Chadwick Boseman reprising the role of T’Challa from last year’s Captain America: Civil War. Read on to find out what our writing team made of this first look at the Phase Three solo movie…
Helen Murdoch: After seeing the poster I was a bit worried but I enjoyed the trailer. A few teases here and there and not too much reveal. Now if they could just leave it at that!
Ben Robins: Black Panther is probably the Marvel property I know the least about, so it was strange watching a Marvel trailer and not getting any of the usual fan service. But it looks really well shot (those actions scenes), BP himself still looks totally hard as nails and I love how inventive it is visually and Andy Serkis’s return. Still not totally sold on Michael B. Jordan’s look, but oddly excited about the soundtrack. Super different, and I think more than anything that’s what we need.
Luke Owen: It looks very bad ass! Loving the style and feel, and any trailer with Run The Jewels is a win in my book. Ryan Coogler is a tremendous filmmaker, so this should be another home run for Marvel Studios.

Danny Hale: Beautiful visuals, great looking action and just the right amount of teases. I really can’t wait to see this cast in action! All aboard the hype train!
Chris Cooper: Knowing nothing about the character makes this a true tease. Very interesting visually and BP looks like a complete badass. Loving the music too. Looking forward to seeing more.
Villordsutch: This actually looks rather splendid. Knowing absolutely diddly squat about Black Panther, I had already assigning this film to “catch it on Blu-ray release” but this teaser trailer alone has fired up my interest.
Anghus Houvouras: It’s a good trailer. It has a different vibe from the other superhero movies out there. Except for the bit where Black Panther is doing his best Spider-Man impression in that car chase scene. Why do superhero movies hate cars so much? I’m trying to think of a Marvel movie that doesn’t involve the wholesale destruction of cars. But I digress.
Villordsutch: They’ll never top The Blues Brothers.

Jordan Jones: Really cool trailer. It continues the trend of Marvel providing solo movies that feel very distinct from one another. I’m getting a serious Batman vibe from Black Panther, which is never a bad thing. I love the clashing mix of tribal, and modern. Every snippet has me intrigued. Can’t wait to see more.
Tom Jolliffe: Looks good. It looks different. It doesn’t just look like a cynical studio ploy to just tick a diversity box and try and grab more money, it looks like a potentially good film that just happens to tick a diversity box. Which is how to do it. Looks part Spike Lee, part Blaxploitation, all sprinkled with a dose of Marvel (but thankfully not too much). I’m definitely sold. Nice cast too and I’m a massive fan of Ryan Coogler. This very much looks it’s own beast, whereas the central core of the Marvel big boys are just melding into one paint by numbers routine to be honest. Spider-Man: Homecoming looks testament to that. I dug Deadpool because it was different. I dug Logan because it was different. I dug Wonder Woman because it evoked films of yore and was about as earnest as you can get, and again, by modern comic book film standards, felt its own beast. Black Panther piques my interest as it looks to offer something fresh.
Tai Freligh: I have to say that I was not that impressed by the trailer. I know nothing about Black Panther and this didn’t really get me excited about the movie. I did think that Spider-Man and Black Panther were the best part of Captain America: Civil War, but I’m still withholding judgement until I see more.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.
Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four) as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) as Okoye, Winston Duke (Person of Interest) as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett (American Horror Story) as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba (Captain America: Civil War) as Ayo, Martin Freeman (Captain America: Civil War) as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis (Captain America: Civil War) as Ulysses Klaue and Letitia Wright (Ready Player One) as Shuri. The film is set for release on February 16th, 2018.
