The Flickering Myth writing team share their thoughts on the It: Chapter Two trailer…

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema gave us our first look at this year’s hotly-anticipatedIt: Chapter Two this week with the release of a trailer for the follow-up to the hugely-successful 2017 Stephen King adaptation. Here’s what our writing team made of this first glimpse at present day Derry, where the Losers’ Club will reunite for one final battle against It…

EJ Moreno: A wonderful way to suck viewers back into the town of Derry and the world of IT. The intro scene is equal parts hilarious and terrifying, which is the true beauty of the story. Also, love that they didn’t overdo Pennywise in this trailer! Make him feel like the shark from Jaws, I want to be scared to see him each time.

Helen Murdoch: Really good trailer! Love how unsettling using this one scene was then followed by the rapid editing. Really excited!

Eammon Jacobs: That opening scene made me feel so tense and uneasy, yet I absolutely loved it. There isn’t much to say about the new cast aside from it’s spot on. Add in a little dash of Pennywise just to tease the murderous clown and I am 100% on board for this.

Matt Spencer-Skeen: Great trailer, I like showcasing the adult Beverlie as she’s probably the most interesting character. Not overusing Pennywise either, loads of great scenes afterwards. A really well put together trailer as well.

Ricky Church: That was a great trailer. I’m not really into It (mostly after being slightly scarred watching the original miniseries when I was 9), but I enjoyed the first film (despite not really wanting to watch it due to said scarring). I like how the scene just gets creepier and creepier, giving a really unsettling feeling that Jessica Chastain does really well with. I like how the trailer only teases Pennywise with quick images and the looks of the adult cast seems pretty spot on. I might actually bite the bullet and see this one in theatres… if I can handle it!

Tai Freligh: Perfection. That opening scene got more and more creepy and tense as it went until it jumps off the deep end at the end. I got wicked The Shining vibes from her looking at the photo and seeing IT. Made me think “he’s always been here”. Seeing the Losers Club returning home and intercutting it with the younger versions of themselves was brilliant. There was just enough glimpses of the clown to remind us that he’s not actually gone. Loved it!

Martin Carr: Tonally very good, atmospheric and worthy of repeat viewings. Off the back of this I would say the casting looks spot on and there is a real sense of depth. Hopefully the finished film lives up to this extended trailer.

Harrison Abbott: Possibly the best trailer since… the one for Chapter 1. I was somewhat nervous about this entry, because the second half of the book is a real slog. But this was very encouraging. I just hope they introduce Maturin. I need to see my cosmic turtle deity on the big screen.

Andy Naylor: What a beautiful, creepy trailer to set the mood for the film. It was uncomfortable and tense to watch Beverly in her old house and just one shot of Pennywise was all that was needed. I can’t wait.

Tom Beasley: I love it when they use extended scenes in trailers (Girl in the Spider’s Web did it too, albeit with the best scene in the film) rather than just delivering an onslaught of images. The tension in that long scene is terrific and the more conventional montage afterwards suggests we’re in for some very memorable horror stuff in the sequel, even though all of the best stuff in the story is in the bit with the kids. The casting is spot on and I have faith in Andy Muschietti, so this could be a real success.

Hasitha Fernando: A truly impressive trailer. The opening sequence was equal parts unsettling and hilarious. Then through a montage sequence we are quickly introduced to the Loser’s Club as adults. Cannot wait to see what James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain and Bill Hader bring into this movie.

So, the FM team was very impressed by this first look at It: Chapter Two, but what did you make of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…

Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, “It Chapter Two” brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.

It: Chapter Two will see Bill Skarsgard reprising his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, while Jessica Chastain (Beverly), James McAvoy (Bill), Bill Hader (Richie), James Ransone (Eddie), Andy Bean (Stanley), Jay Ryan (Ben) and Isaiah Mustafa (Mike) star as the adult versions of The Losers’ Club. Young It stars Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Jack Dylan Grazer and Chosen Jacobs are also set to reprise their roles from the first movie in flashback sequences.
